Difficulty Scale
Easy: Mostly flat, well-marked, kid-friendly. Sneakers fine.
Moderate: Some elevation, some scrambling, takes effort. Hiking shoes recommended.
Hard: Real climb. Long miles, big elevation, technical sections. Boots, water, food, headlamp.
Expert: Don’t do this on a casual day off. Plan it, train for it, leave at sunrise.
Local Hikes
Castle Rock
Distance: 3.9 miles round-trip loop
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 2-3 hours
Some scrambling near the summit. The view from the top shows multiple lakes, islands, and mountains. One of the best return-on-investment hikes in the area.
Snowy Mountain
Distance: 7 miles round trip
Difficulty: Hard
Time: 6-7 hours
2,100 ft elevation gain. The last 1.5 miles are a rocky scramble. Fire tower at the top with views over half the central Adirondacks. Bring a lot of water because there’s nothing reliable along the trail.
High Peaks Hikes (1.5+ hours from camp)
The 46 High Peaks of the Adirondacks are over 4,000 feet. Most start near Keene Valley.
Cascade Mountain
Distance: 4.8 miles round trip
Difficulty: Hard (but the easiest of the High Peaks)
Time: 4-5 hours
360-degree summit views. Most people’s first 46er.
Giant Mountain
Distance: 5.6 miles round trip
Difficulty: Hard
Time: 5-6 hours
Steeper than Cascade, but a classic High Peak with massive views.
Mt. Marcy
Distance: 14.8 miles round trip
Difficulty: Expert
Time: 10-12 hours
Highest point in New York at 5,344 ft. Don’t do this unless you’ve trained, planned and left camp by at 7am.. (Fun fact: Theodore Roosevelt was descending Marcy when he got the news that McKinley was dying.)
Critical Hiking Rules
• Sign in at the trailhead register every time. This is how rangers know to look for you.
• Bring more water than you think you need. There are no reliable streams to filter from at elevation.
• Pack the basics even on a sunny day: headlamp, map, rain jacket, snacks, extra layer. Mountain weather flips fast.
• Cell service is zero in the High Peaks. Tell someone at camp where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
• Get to popular trailheads early on weekends. Cascade and Castle Rock fill by 8am in summer.
