The Enlarging Machine

Props:

• A makeshift “machine” (large box, curtain, or sheet that conceals 1-2 campers)

• Small objects (twig, pebble)

• Larger corresponding objects (log, rock)

• Cup of water

Cast:

#1 – The enthusiastic inventor

#2 – Participant throwing in objects

#3 – Excited observer

#4 – Hidden inside the machine, responsible for throwing out enlarged objects

Volunteer – A counselor or audience member selected for the final trick

Script:

#1: [Grandly gesturing to the audience] Welcome, one and all! I am the brilliant, the magnificent, the stupendous inventor of this amazing device—my Enlarging Machine! Step right up and toss something in. Watch in amazement as it grows before your very eyes!

(The “machine” should be something that effectively hides #4, who will throw out the larger objects.)

#2: [Picks up a twig, throws it in] Here goes nothing!

#4: (From behind the machine, dramatically tosses out a log.)

#3: [Eyes wide] WHOA! That’s awesome! I gotta try! [Picks up a pebble, tosses it in.]

#4: (Throws out a much larger rock.)

#1: [Nods proudly] Ah, yes! My brilliant invention never fails! Now, let’s have one more brave soul give it a try.

(Select a counselor or audience volunteer.)

#1: Hmmm… I don’t see anything for you to throw in. [If the volunteer says they have something, cut them off] Nope, won’t work. Trust me, this machine has rules! But don’t worry—I have an idea. Just spit into it.

(Volunteer spits behind the sheet.)

#4: (Immediately tosses a cup of water onto the volunteer!)

(Audience erupts in laughter as the skit ends.)

Notes:

• Encourage exaggerated reactions to increase comedic effect.

• The machine can be made from a sheet held up by two people, a large cardboard box, or any creative contraption that conceals #4.

• The final water gag should be well-timed for maximum surprise.

• Ensure the volunteer is a good sport—preferably a counselor who can take a joke!
